Evergreen Park in San Jose: A Quiet, Nature-Filled Playground — But Not Ideal for Toddlers

Looking for a peaceful playground in San Jose where your child can run free in nature? Evergreen Park, located at 4860 San Felipe Rd, San Jose, CA 95135, offers a serene, shaded space perfect for a casual outdoor afternoon. But if you’re a parent of a toddler, here’s what you need to know before you go.

🌳 Park Overview

  • Location: Evergreen Park, 4860 San Felipe Rd, San Jose, CA 95135 MAP
  • Parking: Free on-site parking
  • Access: Stroller-friendly, but expect to walk across a large grassy field (about 5 minutes) to reach the playground
  • Vibe: Quiet, residential, and nature-surrounded

🛝 Playground Highlights

  • Target Age: Best suited for kids aged 5–12
  • Structures: Slides, climbing elements, monkey bars, and swings
  • Surface: Wood chips and rubber mat
  • Shade: Some tree shade, but most of the play area is uncovered

👶 Toddler-Friendliness: Limited

If you have a 2-year-old, Evergreen Park’s playground may pose some challenges:

  • The slide is moderately tall, and the climbing structures have large gaps that aren’t toddler-safe.
  • Swings include safety-belt models, but are still not toddler-friendly in design.
  • No tot lot or age-appropriate low structures
  • No fenced-in play area, but it’s set back from the road and surrounded by grass and trees
  • Hats and sunscreen are a must, especially midday

🚻 Amenities

  • Restrooms: Clean, with changing tables
  • Picnic Areas: Several shaded tables available
  • Drinking Fountains: Available
  • Nearby Coffee: Starbucks located just across the road
  • Nature: Dandelions, pine cones, and blooming flowers make for a pleasant nature walk

🧠 Parent Tips

  • Bring your own toys—your toddler may enjoy running on the grass more than using the actual playground
  • Visit early or late in the day to avoid direct sun
  • Good space for birthday parties or casual meetups, but not toddler-specific

📝 Our Experience

We visited on a weekend and saw a Boy Scouts event and a few family gatherings, but overall, the park remained calm and clean. Our 2-year-old enjoyed exploring the open space and looking at flowers more than playing on the structures.
We stayed for about 1 hour, and while we appreciated the peaceful environment, we don’t plan to return anytime soon due to the lack of toddler-friendly features.

Final Thoughts

Evergreen Park is a beautiful, well-maintained green space in San Jose that’s great for families with older children. If you're local and want a nature-filled afternoon, it's worth a visit. But for those with toddlers, you might want to look for parks with more age-appropriate playgrounds.
